Widymo – music from Sanok/Poland – Podkarpacie

  1. Wednesday, 20th of September 2012, Duesseldorf/Germany saw a little group of 7 women, coming from somewhere Poland, where average Germans do not even know, that there is something at all. Normally this little group would have gone unnoticed by the public. But a strange thing happend. Suddenly they had the traditional clothing from Sanok-Region in Southeast-Poland – entered stage in a very small gathering room and begun to SING – but with what VOICES!

2.But how to tell casual interested people in more profound description using just helpless words? The first thing would perhaps be, to say, that voices of Widymo-ensemble very well might be compared with socalled BULGARIAN VOICES, under which keywords some years ago a few Bulgarian women from some very remote to Western Europe aerea made real FURORE.

(Please note in this video from “Bulgarian voices”  the dressing in traditional handwoven aprons [Schürzen] reminding me on TIBET and BUTHAN and NEPAL patterns  and the very strange headdress, reminding me personally on MAYAS in Southamerica and on the socalled “Lady of Elche”, from region of Murcia, Carthagena in SPAIN, which is ascribed  certain “atlantean” characteristics by some observers … )

However, here in Central Western Europe there are no such voices – and because of missing listening experience it may occure that just helpless words would become shale. Perhaps we should meet again after collecting some listening experience from LIFE experience! And with these remarks I simply SKIP a more detailled comment on the SINGING AND VOICE SHAPING TECHNIQUES and some NEAR TO MAGICK effects from RESONANCE and OVERTONES, which, as said before, are UNKNOWN to today Westeuropeans with perhaps some exceptions in the ALPES and adjacent mountains …

To spare just words of no real meaning, I happily now may present from youtube-sources FEW of the titles from Widymo`s program of yesterday, the first part dealing with music from ORTHODOX-Christian singing  in – at least to me myself –  VERY IMPRESSIVE “worshipping interpretation” . Well, IF there may be   for some readers some difficulties to grasp the meaning behind “worshipping interpretation”, which is something FADING AWAY in any Westeuropean context of today, best would be,  to EXPOSE ONESELF TO THE MUSIC DIRECTLY …

This is a socalled “paraliturgical” song from the lots of occasions for casual singing in a in Western Europe forgotten and bygone era of rural society of a SPECIAL CHRISTIAN TYPE, that was at the ROOTS of any CULTURAL GROWTH in especially the surrounding of SLAVONIC people, which have the historical special characteristics that PAGAN rests were alive until around 15th century, which has an effect on popular culture until today, and not only in the sense of surviving witchcraft! We may say perhaps, that from this historical observations may be derived the characteristics of a certain overall SHAMAN-tendency, which is a COMMON SUBSTRATE EAST OF BERLIN and even may be tried to be understood as some sort of worldwide relics from MEGALITHIC WORLD-CIVILIZATION – which is NOT overdoing it  in words, but is from very recent research …  and,  well, may be something, the audience might  feel some  need to adjust  to … Another difficulty is, that to Western Europeans in today situation of vanishing Christianity everywhere it is needed a special explanation, what the songtext  is about, which is St.Mary Magdalena entering after day of crucifiction – to orthodox believers known under the greek word “staurosis” [pronaunce something similar to “stavrosis”]  – the tomb  of Jesus Christ, the Savior, and finding it EMPTY with however 2 ANGELS explaining, what has happened, which is, that Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead as ALIVE, such giving proof for IMMORTALITY and proof  of his NATURE AS BEING GOD – at least to the believers and in special to the believer from any Eastchristian Orthodox denomination … Being myself ORTHODOX Christian we normally would add, that in orthodoxy there are very special traditions, which in the West of today are not, tradtions around St. Maria Magdalena, St. James, brother of the Lord, the true cross relics, the wonder of Holy Fire each Easter in Jerusalem, some mysteries from the “Holy Ark of covenant”  in Aksum/ Ethiopia  and so forth.  Instead of digging here too deep for the casual reader, we may hint here only to the fact, that this video is presenting the members of Widymo-ensemble, which were yesterday on stage in Duesseldorf, “Jazz-Schmiede” in historical  buildings of former Jagenberg-industries.

[If I may add here from studies in ethnology: The “forge” and the “blacksmith” are in any SHAMAN-surrounding of course automatically near to some sort of MAGICK, especially as coming from the ELEMENT FIRE, and father of all these rather enigmatitical  metallurgical knowledge and “humdrum” is TUBAL KAIN, the GIANT, of the biblical apocryphical scrolls , which may be seen in  comparison to HEPHAISTOS of the Greek, who is connected to VOLCANOES  [the Etna/Sicily for instance] – and this remark is not only SIDEWAY, but has very certainly something to do with traditions of CARPARTY and especially the GIANT ZALMOXIS of BUCEGI-mountains around Sarmizegetusa in what is today  Roumania … To remember these VERY OLD CONNECTIONS – dating back indeed to somewhere 2.800 BC or so ! – is especially helpful to produce some UNDERSTANDING, if this “POLISH” Widymo-ensemble stresses the point of some SPECIAL RELATIONS BEYOND THE TODAY BORDERS to RHUTHENIA , MORAVIA and even  MOLDAVA – or other regions of former Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria and especially in ALL THE CARPARTY mountains, which are all geographical names the average well-informed Westeuropean reader of today with some certainty will have to look up in an encyclopedia! If I am allowed to add in short: Former “Galicia” in the today borderlands of Poland  and  Ukrainia is just the SAME linguistic root as in GALICIA in NORTHERN SPAIN or as in GALATA-SERAY – known to all soccer-fans – in Istanbul or as in  “letters to the Galateans” in St.Paul`s biblical writings to people settling in FORMER HETHIT regions around today Ankara – and which is indicating some sort of socalled “CELTIC” influence – despite all the terrible scientific problems to give decisive definition for “Celtic” as DIFFERS heavily  if derived from archeology or ethnology or linguistics – such for instance as  in analyses of spreading of hydrological names … ]

To make it short in this section: the entire first part was taken from paraliturgical singing of Eastchristian-Orthodox  type

  • one title telling of “Zarju nebesju” – the Heavenly King
  • another singing on the “Zaritsa nebesnaja” – the Heavenly Queen

  • another singing of “Bosha Matki” – the Mother of God, such adressing St. Mary, the ever virgin,  in a manner, more widely known to listeners from West European context.

  • and one title sung for pilgrimage, when in the days of old, pious and poor women came together to visit the monasteries of the region, which actions  for them were  “icons”, an “imago” or analogues  for the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, which has very special meanings in orthodox tradtions, such as for instance the yearly wonder of holy fire on every GREEK EASTER … and others I do not feel obliged here to deal with in more detail … especially not to a world, full of resent against the Christian Message of Salvation today.

[And please excuse: The Slavonic spelling may be incorrect and more near to the UKRAINIAN-RUSSIAN type of CHURCH-SLAVONIC, I myself am used to …]

And, well, here comes from youtube a CHRISTMAS paraliturgical singing expressing the GREAT JOY OF CHRISTMAS – RADUJTESJA NEBO CHRISTOS NARODETSJA (or similar,the  meaning of which  is: RECOICE BECAUSE CHRIST  IS BORN)

(And well, LOOK: somehow me learning Polish Vocabulary paid out INDEED, because yesterday I was one of the VERY FEW Germans that DID understand at least SOMETHING from the ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, which in this case however is not PURE POLISH language, but a POLISH MODIFIED TYPE of the COMMON CHURCHSLAVONIC-language, which until today is understood nearly EVERYWHERE in Eastern Europe and very certainly contributing to the STRONG CULTURAL COHERENCE there, which is something QUITE DIFFERENT to today situation in Western Europe. (We even more curious may  add, that the geographical names MORAVIA and BESSARABIA/Moldova until today are indicating, that those regions once were under OSMAN rule!)

  1. The second part of program was devoted to more practical aspects of life, namely all sorts of heavy complicated stories around LOVE , around love again – but some little bit OTHER as in TODAY EVERYDAY PRACTICE in Western Europe!
    Or did you ever hear of two MOTHERS FIGHTING, that a girl might NOT be married to the “wrong hereditary family” and such in the end was  married to not anybody. Or did you ever hear of a youngster that FIRST had to go to a WISE OLD WOMAN SAGE, which advised him to camouflage himself as girl to overcome the entrance-blockage of the girls FATHER, which however did not work that well and in the end was discovered ending in loud outcries everywhere from everyone. And of course: Even in those remote Sanok-mountains of far away Carpathian and Ruthenian mountains there might occur AFFAIRS on the womens side - in one songtext of this evening even with cutoff head, which afterwards was placed into the basement of a mill, which is some common SLAVONIC hereditary phenomenon called in the books "building sacrifice" - , not to speak of all the aberrations from the rigtheous ways on  the mens side.

  1. Final

In the end we learned, that the choir had to celebrate the birthday of the conductor just on this evening. But they did not congratulate in a manner, I expected, which would be in any Polish surroundings “STO LAT” or ” (may you  live) 100 years”! Instead to my surprise they sung Mnogaja leta [which is the Eastchristian-Orthodox way to do things]  – but not  the  best known version from Dmitrij Bortnjanski, but a lesser known SPECIAL UKRAINIAN version – which I nearly was tempted to join into, because I once did an arrangement for that  which you may listen to below – and which is my truly felt wish for these musicians from ways of music so much near to my own heart and which I may have somehow “inherited” by my own mother, who in the years of tragediy of war once lived and was married in Poland (so that I indeed became Polish at time of my birth myself!)

This was my introductory view on a PHENOMENON. which for me from my own studies in musical ethnology and from my own singing experience in an orthodox choir – I should perhaps mention, that this choir really did something, which in Westeuropean context nearly would be unbelievable, which is some sort of IMPROVISATION WITH MULTIPLE VOICES WITHIN A CHOIR!!!! – well, this evening was for me personally highly welcomed and rather an enrichment. The ensemble has choosen by the way a strange and somewhat PROUD name in that “widymo” means not by mistake nor by accident ” WE KNOW” or – if you prefer the US-Obama style – “Yes, WE CAN!”!  WHAT THEY KNOW, THAT WE IN WEST EUROPE have forgotten? Well, find out for yourself!

A big thanks goes to Duesseldorf township and municipal authorities which due to partnership with Warszawa  and with  the Polish Institute in Citadell-street assisting made it all possible and happening.

And well, folks here in Germany, all those missing on this evening, except the  estimated to maximum 30 or so visitors to this evening, have missed a wonderful experience and a wonderful occasion to LEARN something of REAL importance to ALL HUMAN LIFE  and existence on this planet … regardless of your level of income …
